How Long is Your Home Renovation Project Going to Take

When you’re in the middle of a home renovation it can seem like it is taking forever, endless days of noise and mess and you can’t wait to get back to normal.  Some projects like kitchen or bathroom renovations can completely disrupt your life and you want them over with quickly.  Basement renovations might be a little easier to tolerate, after all you won’t have to do your dishes in the bathtub because of them.  No matter the project, you want to know how long your renovation is going to take.  Let’s look at some of the more common renovations and how long they should take.

Bathroom Renovations:

Updating your bathroom with a new shower, spa features and updated fixtures all sounds like a dream.  Bathroom renovations can get pretty pricey with the average cost for renovation being around $30,00 not only that but you’re going to be living without your bathroom for 2-3 weeks when all is said and done.  If you have more than one bathroom it isn’t so bad, but in the meantime you’re going to have noise, workmen trudging through your house and brushing your teeth in the kitchen sink.

Kitchen Renovations:

There are two types of kitchen renovations, a simple upgrade  and a complete renovation.  Let’s start with the upgrade, that will cost on average about $30,000 and take up to two weeks.  This type of upgrade can include updating your appliances, new sinks, new faucets, replacing your cabinet fronts and installing some new flooring.

A complete kitchen renovation is where you take out all of the old cabinets and replaces them with new ones,  new countertops, new lighting, new flooring and new appliances.  This type of renovation will cost somewhere around $60,000 and can take up to 3 months to complete.  This type of renovation makes you want to tear your hair out.  You will need a general contractor, electricians, plumbers, you will need to get permits and you can get held up at any step along the way.

Replacing Your Roof:

While it is one of the more common home improvement projects, it’s one of the least disruptive to your life and the quickest to get finished.  A new roof will run you around $10,000 but it will generally be done in less than a week.  It will be relatively noisy but the mess is outside and there won’t be any workmen trudging through your home.  Once they are done, you will have to clean up the yard but it is way better than showering at the gym.

Finishing Your Basement:

Finishing your basement is a great idea, it gives more usable space in your home and it will increase the value of your home.  That being said it isn’t going to come cheap, the average cost to finish a basement is around $40,000.  It can take anywhere from two weeks to a month, depending on whether you need to add plumbing and electrical.  However, all the work is being done in an area of your home you’re not currently using. It will be noisy, but you can use the rest of your home as normal.
